The Teaching and Learning of Accessibility
Welcome to our website, a resource for design educators to teach students how to design accessible and equitable solutions for people with diverse abilities and disabilities. This site has course outlines, lectures, classroom activities, project handouts, and many other resources for your pedagogy.
Our materials will guide you through various ways to teach Abilities Design in various design courses. We provide you with information that will increase your knowledge about generating accessible design solutions, which you can then pass on those insights to your students.
What Is Abilities Design?
Abilities Design is a comprehensive framework that creates accessible design solutions for people with diverse abilities.
It encompasses three main key parts:
Accessible Design Fundamentals
Teaching and learning principles, theories, and methods to generate accessible design solutions.
Disability Studies Insights
Emphasizing problem-seeking rather than problem-solving, using insights from disability studies.
Unified Approach: UD, UDL, and ID
Integrating aspects of Universal Design (UD), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Inclusive Design (ID) to meet accessibility objectives.
Why Accessibility Is Crucial in Design

Promotes Equity and Liberation
Understanding intersectionality and accessibility ensures that diverse needs are addressed, leading to more equitable environments where everyone can participate fully and freely, without facing systemic barriers.

Enhances Empathy and Awareness
Learning about disability studies helps individuals develop empathy and a deeper awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities, fostering a more compassionate and understanding society.

Improves Design and Innovation
Knowledge of accessibility principles drives better design and innovation, resulting in products, services, and environments that are usable by a broader range of people, including those with disabilities.

Supports Social Justice
Intersectionality highlights the various social identities and the unique experiences of discrimination faced by individuals. This awareness is crucial for addressing social injustices and promoting equality.

Fosters Legal and Ethical Compliance
Understanding accessibility and disability rights is essential for ensuring compliance with legal standards such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other regulations, reducing the risk of legal issues and promoting ethical practices.

Removes Accessibility Barriers
Education in these areas equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and remove physical, digital, and social barriers, creating inclusive spaces that enable everyone to participate fully.
Designing for Diverse Experiences
No single disability experience is universal, making it crucial to consider intersectionality in design to ensure accessibility solutions address the diverse and overlapping needs of all users.
Brainstorm With Abilities Design
Abilities Design was first created as a brainstorming method for students to generate accessible design solutions. While Universal Design, Universal Design for Learning, and Inclusive Design have different approaches to accessibility, this method reveals how their principles and methods overlap, uncovering connections for meeting accessible objectives.
As a brainstorming tool, Abilities Design introduces accessibility fundamentals by demonstrating how solutions begin with ideas that foster critical thinking and a user-centered design approach.

Importance of Abilities Design
Act Now: Foster Social Consciousness to Achieve Accessibility Goals
Abilities Design is crucial for addressing the needs of significant populations, as 26% of U.S. adults, 24% of European adults, and over 1 billion people worldwide have disabilities. Learning this field promotes inclusive, user-centric design solutions and offers significant benefits:
- Diverse Understanding: Enhances knowledge to design for varied experiences and needs.
- Economic Potential: Taps into the third-largest market segment in the U.S., offering substantial economic opportunities.
- Global Relevance: Addresses the needs of a vast, underserved population’s needs, promoting inclusivity worldwide.
Address Ableism by Teaching the Impact of Inaccessible Design
If we don’t include people with disabilities as a user group when assigning projects, students will remain unaware of the potential accessibility barriers their designs may create. This oversight prevents them from recognizing and understanding the ableism and historical injustices that people with disabilities have faced.
By involving this user group, students can reflect on their own work and become more socially conscious designers committed to equity and inclusion.
Why Teach Abilities Design?
Incorporate the Topics of Disability Studies and Accessibility into Your Curriculum
Through a user-centered design approach, these resources enhance students’ visual design skills and develop their divergent, analytical, and critical thinking abilities.
Skills in designing for accessibility are in high demand. A 2022 Wall Street Journal report noted a 78% increase in job postings requiring accessibility knowledge. Employers prioritize these skills to create inclusive products, meet diverse needs, and comply with accessibility regulations.

Job postings asking for accessibility knowledge rose by 38% between 2019–2020 and 78% between 2020–2021.
Abilities Design Helps Professors
Use a Holistic Approach to Teaching and Learning About Accessible Design
Understanding the ins and outs of accessibility guidelines and possessing the technical knowledge and design skills to meet accessibility standards is essential. However, to truly embrace equity and inclusion for people with disabilities, one must also learn about the history, culture, and social constructs of disability. Only then can truly effective, accessible design solutions be developed.
Create a learning experience for your students that enables them to understand and influence the culture and social impact of accessibility through their design choices.
