A Library of Projects for You to Use
Teaching How to Design for the Diverse Experiences of People With Different Abilities and Disabilities
We offer your students a diverse range of projects across various communication design disciplines because the quality of your assigned projects greatly influences your teaching success. This is especially true as accessibility is vital to students’ development as professional designers, preparing them to handle projects where accessibility is a priority and advocate for its implementation when it is not realized accessibility is needed.
It Starts With Disability Studies
Before starting any project, students should research disability studies to understand the cultural, social, and historical implications of accessibility. These exercises reveal the vibrancy and self-advocacy of the disability community, highlight daily systemic ableism, and emphasize that accessibility is essential for justice and liberation, not merely a “nice thing to have.”

When students examine a wide range of disability studies topics, they will discover the legacy of individuals who pushed for accessibility and disability rights, such as Ed Roberts and Judith Heumann, who are spotlighted in the illustration above.
Visit the Disability Studies page for exercises and activities you can use with your students.
